Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the silent film comedy, MARQUIS PREFERRED, released at the end of the silent era in 1929 by Paramount Pictures and directed by Frank Tuttle. Having squandered his fortune in the pursuit of pleasure, the Marquis d’Argenville (Adolphe Menjou) finds that he is unable to pay his staff or his creditors. To recoup their money, the creditors decide to incorporate the marquis and have him sign an agreement to wed heiress Gwendolyn Gruger (Lucille Powers), the daughter of a wealthy American sausage maker (Chester Conklin). Their plan goes awry, however, when the marquis falls in love with Gwendolyn’s poor companion, Peggy Winton (Nora Lane). The image features an interior medium shot of the Marquis d’Argenville (Adolphe Menjou) enjoying a laugh with the wealthy American sausage maker, Mr. Gruger (Chester Conklin). As indicated by a rubber stamp on the verso, this photograph was taken by Hollywood photographer W.P. McPherson. It is in very fine- condition with a light curl along the top and bottom borders; a light 1 in. diagonal crease on the bottom left corner in the borders only; and light signs of wear on the tip of the top left corner. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws. While a copy of this film is preserved at the Library of Congress, it was inadvertently omitted from the "American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films 1921-1929."
