Item description
Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1930's gambling-themed crime drama, STREET OF CHANCE, released in 1930 by Paramount Pictures and directed by John Cromwell. A big-time, but honest, gambler has to prevent his younger brother from following in his footsteps and taking up gambling. The cast includes William Powelll, Jean Arthur, Kay Francis, Regis Toomey, Stanley Fields, Brooks Benedict, and Betty Francisco.
The image features an interior shot of John D. Marsden (William Powell), poker chips and cards on the gambling table in front of him, talking to Al Mastick (Brooks Benedict) while Dorgan (Stanley Fields) watches the pair. As indicated by a rubber stamp on the verso, this photograph was taken by Eugene Robert Richee (AKA "Gene"), the renowned Hollywood photographer working at Paramount at this time. It is in fine- condition with random creases in the borders and a few creases in the image area from handling over time. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, writing, or other flaws. There is a second rubber stamp noting the film's original title (?) of THE COLOR OF MONEY, which was crossed-out in pencil.
Street pf Chance was loosely based on the life of Arnold Rothstein, a well-known gambler in New York in the 1920’s. It was the only film that year to be nominated for the "Best Writing" Academy Award but not the coveted "Best Picture" Award. The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1962-1965) remade this story under the title of "A Piece of the Action," starring Gig Young and Robert Redford, which was the premier program of that show.
