Vintage Santa Clara MINIATURE POLYCHROME POTTERY Margaret Gutierrez 1989 6pc Lot For your consideration is this very rare 6 piece lot of handmade miniature polychrome pottery by award winning Santa Clara potter Margaret Gutierrez, circa 1989. This was created by Margaret herself after the death of her brother Luther, who she had collaborated with since the 1960s until his passing in 1987. This fabulous and absolutely adorable 6 piece lot includes a Mudhead kachina, a Koshare clown kachina, a wedding vase, canteen and standard vase with the Avanyu Serpent, and a shorter wedding vase with a billy goat motif. These are the same designs she created with Luther in miniature form and has a lot of amazing detailed painting against an earthtone matte background. The pieces range in size from 3" tall to about 1 1/2" tall. They are in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Some pieces do show signs of slight paint fading, but overall in excellent condition. Hallmarked "Margaret" by the famous Santa Clara potter. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Margaret Gutierrez (born 1936) and Luther Gutierrez (1911?1987) were brother and sister potters from the Santa Clara pueblo, NM. They learned the art from their parents and began making pottery together in the 1960s. They continued the polychrome style of painting made famous by their parents Lela and Van Gutierrez. Margaret and Luther?s painted slips included unique color combinations. Their first creations included polychrome bowls, jars and wedding vases with designs centered on the Avanyu (water serpent), rain, clouds and lightning and sky bands. In the 1970s they came up with their original idea of making polychrome caricatures of animals and other smaller figurines rather than the jars made famous by their parents.
