Canopic vessels are vessels used by the ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the guts of the dead for the afterlife. was usually made of limestone or clay . Not all of the viscera were kept in one canopy, but there were 4 canopic jars, each for preserving a specific organ: stomach , intestine , lungs , liver . Which it was believed that the dead will need it in the hereafter . There was no heart vessel , as the Egyptians believed it to be the seat of the soul and so it was left inside the body.
Canopic jars in the Old Kingdom were rarely engraved, and had a regular cap. In the Middle Ages carvings became more common, and pot caps in the shape of human heads became common. In the Nineteenth Dynasty , the lids of the four vessels were made so that each depicted one of the four sons of Horus , as guards for the members inside the vessels.
