The Tenth Planet by Edmund Cooper
Book Club Edition
From the dustjacket: Earth is dying as they predicted. It is dying of over-pollution and over-population. Only the adults can remember having seen blue skies. Crops fail, the rain seems to fall perpetually, entire nations starve, governments collapse. A familiar theme? But it is not the theme of this exciting novel, only the curtain-raiser. The Dag Hammarskjold is the last space-ship to life off from earth. It carries a precious cargo for the developing colony on Mars: scientific instruments, rare minerals, the seeds of specially adapted plants, frozen animal sperm and ova, and ten children of various nationalities and of genius-level intelligence. The last gift from the dying Earth to the young colony that is now mankind's only hope of survival. The crew of the Dag Hammarskjold are Martian born, but the captain, Idris Hamilton is an Earthman. Soon he may be the last Earthman.
The vessel is almost prevented by rioters from leaving Woomera, the only open spaceport. But even when it has successfully left Earth, it is still not out of danger. Idris suspects sabotage. The bombs are found too late. The Dag Hammarskjold will never reach Mars; and Idris Hamilton discovers in the most fantastic circumstances that he has been the last Earthman for a long time. A very long time.
