Item description
The Bible is a divine-human book. It is a revelation from God, but it was given through human instruments: it is of divine origin, but is also of human origin. It is this human origin of the New Testament which is the special field of study treated in this book. The relation of the divine and the human in the inspiration of the Bible is frequently ignored or misunderstood. Jesus Christ is bot human and divine, in one personality. So the Bible is of heavenly origin and at the same time from an earthly source. We must recognize the fact that the New Testament was not dictated to stenographers by the Holy Spirit. The inspiration was not mechanical, but intelligent and vital. The writers were inspired in their thinking and feeling as they wrote. They thought the thoughts of God, moved by the Holy Spirit, and have recorded those thoughts for us. The Synoptic Gospels give us the human side o f the life of Jesus Christ. We are not to neglect this any more than the spiritual interpretation of Christ found in John's Gospel and the Epistles of the New Testament. Just so, we should not neglect the human origin of the New Testament. This study looks at the literary and historical background of the New Testament writings, as well as a survey of their contents.
