Item description

Measures 8-5/16" X 10-23/32", 16 pp plus covers, b w illustrations, issue #34 (May1962), published by The Realist Association (NY). Group 9-3435 Years before NATIONAL LAMPOON, a modest little "adult satire" underground magazine was born, the brainchild of PAUL KRASSNER, who had decided that MAD MAGAZINE was becoming far too tame, and that more mature adults needed a more controversial and biting satire publication. Borrowing a few chops from MARK TWAIN, H. L. MENCKEN, JONATHAN SWIFT, AMBROSE BIERCE, WILL ROGERS, WALT KELLY and others, Krassner stirred up the contents, and created THE REALIST in 1958; and, current events being what they are, THE REALIST stuck around until 2001, a couple years after Krassner himself had died. Apparently, no one had informed the magazine of his passing. Here's the contents from an early issue: A Study In Hypocrisy: The Kickback Morality -- by JACK CRAWFORD Jr. Sir Realist (Letters from readers) -- A Hen Of Another Color -- by BENNETT CERF -- Extra-Sensory Perception -- by EDD DOERR -- On Sex Education -- by PATRICIA FELLMAN -- Planned Litterhood -- by GOTTLIEB JAHN -- Mixed Emotions -- by JACK CRAWFORD Jr. -- With Relish -- by CHARLES CARVER -- Staple Economy -- by ROGER PRICE -- Couple Of Columnists -- by ARTHUR LOCKWOOD Editorial Type Stuff -- Yes, Virginia. . . -- Somethingness On The Screen -- To Soothe The Savage Scientist -- Motivational Transference -- Sex Education And The Status Quo -- The Bomb Shelter As A Bastion Of Freedom -- by CURTIS ZAHN Single Panel Cartoon -- by HOWARD SHOEMAKER Modest Proposal No. 4: By All Means, LET 'em Bomb Synagogues -- by JOHN FRANCIS PUTNAM And Now For The Bottom 40 Hits Hark, The Herald Angel Comes! -- by MURIEL I. SYMINGTON Single Panel Cartoon -- by MORT GERBERG The Power Of Prayer -- If Any -- by WILLIAM D. YEAGER Single Panel Cartoon -- by WALDMAN RICHARD M. NIXON. . .Double-Standard Bearer -- by HARRY KURSH Modest Proposal No. 5 As THE REALIST Sees It The Battle Against Nuclear Protest Boats -- by JOHN FRANCIS PUTNAM Rumors Of The Month Requiem For A Pope Modest Proposal No. 6 Daily Ad Review Shipping charges include postage (including USPS Tracking on domestic shipments), packaging materials, labor fuel (the nearest post office is 14 MILES away!); but I do combine shipping charges on multiple items -- so fill up that cart NOW an' save some $$$!
