Events dramatised in the series include the alliance of the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret with divorced older man Peter Townsend in 1955, the kidnap attempt in 1974 on the Queen's daughter, Princess Anne, the tensions between the Crown and Thatcher's government in 1986 over sanctions against South Africa, the infamous 'annus horribilis' of 1992 that saw the breakdown of the marriages of two of the Queen's sons, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, as well as a fire at Windsor Castle, and finally the marriage in 2005 of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
