Item description

THE OLD PEABODY PEW by Kate Douglas Wiggin Houghton, Mifflin Co., First Edition, Oct. 1907 Condition: Very Good+ to Near Fine in Very Good- dust jacket This novel, written primarily for adults, is from the author of the children's classics REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM and MOTHER CAREY'S CHICKENS. The book's sub-title is A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE OF A COUNTRY CHURCH. The attractiveness of the book is abundantly enhanced by six color illustrated plates by Alice Barber Stephens and by green candle and wreath designs around the text, chapter numbers, on the endpapers and even around the illustrations. The top page edges are gilt. (The book was printed by The Riverside Press, known for their high quality first editions.) Two cover corners are lightly bumped with only slight traces of wear, and the spine head shows light wear; the lower front hinge has some paper slitting, but not serious; the pages are near fine with light age toning. The scarce dust jacket has some small to modest edge chips and tears, but, except for these and a tiny hole on the spine, the jacket is unusually bright and attractive (even the spine isn't faded) for a 110-year-old dust wrapper. The front and spine are identical to those of the book; the flaps are blank, and the back, listing some of the publisher's other books, shows the date 1907.
