Item description
Vintage 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy copy photograph (not a vintage original photo printed at the time it was taken) from the classic 1920's silent film drama/romance, TESS OF THE STORM COUNTRY, released in 1922 by United Artists and directed by John S. Robertson. Based upon the novel by Grace Miller White, Wealthy Elias Graves (David Torrence) builds his home on the top of a hill, where a group of squatters have taken up residence at the bottom. Many of the men in the squatters' village have their eyes on young Tess (Mary Pickford), and one of them, Ben Letts (Jean Hersholt), frames Tess's father (Forrest Robinson) for murder. While maintaining her father's innocence, Tess must keep her love for Graves' son (Lloyd Hughes)a secret, while caring for Elias' daughter's (Gloria Hope) illegitimate child.
Pickford originally made Tess of the Storm Country for Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company in 1914, which was directed by Edwin S. Porter (who directed the famous early 1903 short, The Great Train Robbery), and this was the only film in her career which she decided to remake. The image features an interior shot of Tess (Mary Pickford) sitting on the floor of her shanty as she is comforted by handsome Frederick Graves (Lloyd Hughes), whom she is in love with. It is in very fine condition with a 0.25 in. diagonal crease on the top right corner There are no pinholes, tears, stains, or other flaws.
Provenance: The Collection of Robert Cushman. Mr. Cushman worked at the Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for many years and was a major private collector on and author about Mary Pickford.
