About this book:
When twelve-year-old Barry Loomis learns that two big new highways are to meet in her small town of Northville, she isn't nearly as impressed as everyone else seems to be. Her cousin Alicia, who lives in the city, calls Northville a "whistle stop," and Barry is sure new roads won't be enough to change Alicia's negative opinion.
Soon, however, it appears that the new highways may make a difference. Because of them, the townspeople are suddenly talking furtively about the gloomy old Parrish mansion. And, almost overnight, many new people come to Northville: young Chris Clark, who seems shy and aloof; handsome Mr. Kenyon; Roy Upton, a sullen teen-ager; Ellen Conway, the new waitress at Millie's restaurant. Barry overhears her parents' worried conversation about the possible revival of Northville's "old trouble," but when she queries them about it, they refuse to give her any details.
Then Alicia comes for her annual summer visit, and Barry persuades her to join forces in finding out what is going on. Together, the girls succeed in convincing Chris to take part in their secret sleuthing. It is only after the young people become involved in a dangerous situation that they find out what is really happening in Northville. And Alicia admits it is "a wonderful, exciting, marvelous whistle stop!"
