Sodium butyrate (butyric acid) is the basic energetic material for the gastrointestinal epithelium. The use of microcapsule technology, unlike standard forms of butyric acid, protects against the complete release of butyric acid in the upper gastrointestinal tract and allows it to be delivered to the small and large intestines. The microcapsule passes through the digestive tract to the small intestine and further into the small intestine, where further amounts of sodium butyrate are released. The composition of the microcapsule is selected so that the release of sodium butyrate takes place over the entire length of the small and large intestine.
