Item description

Original unpublished snapshot photograph of the SS "City of Brunswick" taken in Tampa, Florida where it was built. It is adhered to a single page removed from a photo album that originally belonged to, and was compiled sometime beginning in 1914, by William Roy Snyder. We know he served in the military during WWI, and later he worked for Metropolitan Sound Studios, Inc. and was involved in the filming of several Hollywood movies. On the reverse side of this album page are some unrelated snapshots that include a view of the New Orleans harbor; the harbor in Limon, Costa Rica; and the USS C-5 (SS-16) submarine at sea. The album page measures approximately 8 x 5.5. Condition: These are original, unpublished photographs, most likely one of a kind. They are in very good condition. Comments: The "City of Brunswick" was a steam cargo ship built in 1921 by Oscar Daniels Shipbuilding Company of Tampa for the United States Shipping Board as part of the wartime shipbuilding program of the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) to restore the nation's Merchant Marine. The freighter ran aground and was wrecked on her first commercial trip to Europe off Halifax in August 1921.
