Item description
Shakespeare,
William, THE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, Edinburgh: Bell Bradfute, J.
Dickson, W. Creech, J. J. Fairbairn, and T. Duncan, Booksellers, 1795. 2vols
only, both signed by Confederate Captain Sally Louisa Tompkins with one also
being signed by her brother Confederate Colonel Christopher Tompkins, being
volumes 2 and 4 only, of an 8-volume set (full 8vol. matching set available in store), full calf hardcovers w/gilt titling
to spines, Good +/n.a., 12mo (6.8125x4.250?), v.2, 360pp.; v.4, 406pp. Bindings
are well chipped and rubbed but totally intact, vol.2 having both boards temporarily
reattached with treated tissue paper to joint and inside hinge, repairs being
easily reversible should one desire to do so. Texts showing occasional chipping,
tearing, and candle drips, 1? hole in one of the front free fly-leaves of
volume 2, presumably to remove dripped candle wax, volume 2 missing tail-band,
volume 4 missing headband, light age-toning, staining occasionally
throughout. All books are readable and
intact as is, but wanting full restoration, should one be of the inclination. Ensconced in a leather covered wooden box for
safe keeping, which is included. A
remarkable and distinctive Capture of Tyme ? quite rare indeed.
