Email with any questions.....thank you. ========================================================================= Robert Moskowitz (1935- ) Robert Moskowitz (born 1935 in Brooklyn, New York) is a contemporary American painter who was influenced by, among other movements, Abstract Expressionism, and gained recognition in the 1960s onward for his paintings, drawings and prints that work in the intersection between Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop Art. He was influenced in his early career by such artists as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Although his work has been described as a "significant link between the Abstract Expressionism of the New York School and the 'New Image Abstraction' painters of the mid-1970s", Moskowitz has received relatively little public attention and never achieved the level of fame that many of his peers have. Historically, Moskowitz is widely known as a prominent figure in the "New Image Painters", a group of artists named after the 1978 Whitney exhibition that marked a return to an overt figurative style in painting after the conceptual periods of Minimalism, performance, and installation. Moskowitz continues to work with a discrete economy of means. His paintings distill notions of figure and ground into those of solid and void. Caught between abstraction and representation, Moskowitz's use of negative space suspends the moment of image recognition. Previously, Moskowitz has addressed iconic subjects referencing art history, antiquity, and New York City, notably: Rodin's The Thinker, Brancusi's Bird In Space, Greco-Roman discus throwers, Michealangelo's Sistine Chapel, and the Empire State building. Prior to catastrophic events, Moskowitz produced both World Trade Center and Tsunami images. Robert Moskowitz has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad since his first solo exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, in 1962.
