SoVintageous is offering this fabulous, extremely rare, sterling silver, turquoise, red coral and jet Navajo Kokopelli overlay pendant, handmade by the late Richard Begay (1943 - 2013). Traditionally revered by some Native American tribes, the Kokopelli is a fertility deity, storyteller, healer, prankster and representative of the spirit of music. This pendant has all the typical features of the Kokopelli: a hunch-backed flute player in a dancing pose with feathers on his head. Richard Begay was a member of the iconic Begay family of Navajo silversmiths, including his wife Rita and son Philbert. He was a tenured artist at the Santa Fe Indian Market and has his work displayed in permanent collections at the Smithsonian and the Heard Museum in Phoneix. His work also appears in Gregory Schaaf’s book “American Indian Jewelry I. Richard Begay was also an award-winning artist, considered to be a master of mosaic inlay and double layer inlay. He is also credited as the first to do storyteller bracelets and channel work. This wonderful Kokopelli pendant has inlaid turquoise, jet and red coral and is an unusually large and beautifully detailed piece. I have searched and searched online and in books to find another Richard Begay Kokopelli pendant like this, to no avail, making this is a very rare, valuable and collectible Richard Begay pendant!!
