THIS WEEK: our cover is designed from a mid-century map of Vienna, home of the characters depicted thereon in the roles of their Arabella broadcast next Saturday afternoon.
We are happy to welcome Erich Leinsdorf back to the Metropolitan podium in an interview by Frank Merkling on Arabella, which the Austrian-born conductor will interpret for the radio audience.
In answer to several requests we have asked Paul Nettl of the music department of the University of Indiana to discuss another, more bewildering opera of Richard Strauss, the fantastic Woman Without a Shadow, never yet produced in the United States.
AND NEXT; we shall celebrate the approaching broadcast of Siegfried by interviews with its two new interpreters, Martha Moedl and Wolfgang Windgassen.
A study of the first Heldentenors of Wagner's day will be offered by William Ashbrook.
The Heroine as a Young Man, by Frederick W. Stern f eld.
The Right Girl in the Wrong Room, by Frank J. Warnke.
A Cool Air of Woodwinds, an interview with Erich Leinsdorf.
Falling in Love with Arabella, by Paul Spencer.
We introduce Jon Crain.
Arabella, Opera of the Week.
