Item description
Recollections of Bush Life in Australia - During a Residence of Eight Years in the Interior
By Henry William Haygarth
London: John Murray, 1848 (1st edition)
Rare first edition of this pre-gold rush account of life in New South Wale. Haygarth spent eight years on a station 230 miles south west of Sydney in the 1840s. He uses incidents from his own experience in Australia to illustrate the life of a typical squatter. Haygarth includes notes on his interactions with the local Aboriginal tribes, including a description of a dance he witnessed, but is perhaps best with his constant explanations of the evolution of Australian language
Red embossed leather boards with gilt spine titles. 167 pages + publisher's advertising. 7.5" x 5.25".
