"THE WALL" THIS WEEK IN PW: Significant changes in the Book Trade in the First Half of the 20th Century. Books Dealing with the Writers of the 20th Century and Their Work. NEWS OF THE WEEK. EDITORIAL. YOU MEET SUCH INTERESTING PEOPLE. TIPS FOR THE BOOKSELLER. BOOKS INTO FILMS. SHOP TALK. PW FORECASTS. WEEKLY RECORD. PRESENT AND FUTURE: Now that the holidays are over, PW is swinging into the New Year and facing one of the busiest months of the season. Publishers' replies to our Spring Announcement Questionnaire are coming in, and letters to booksellers went out December 27. We hope we will have heard from all of the publishers by January 6, and from the booksellers by January 13, so that we can present the most complete picture possible of what the spring season has in store. For the first Book Production section of PW in 1950, in the issue of January 7, a feature will be a review of the present status of the new developments in production about which so much has been written in the past two years. Daniel Melcher of the Bowker staff has prepared this round-up. Another feature will be an article by Percy Seitlin, designer, on calligraphy as Paul Standard practices and teaches it. Designers and buyers of design, says Mr. Seitlin, need more education concerning the uses of the free, spontaneous lettering made possible by the broad-edge pen. Another bookmaking article will be a critique by Helmut Lehmann-Haupt of Columbia University, of the way photographs are handled in certain current books, and how the handling might be improved. In the front part of the January 7 issue we will publish "A Plan To Support the Publication of Literary Works," by John Jamieson, general editor of H. W. Wilson. He proposes a method for subventioning the publication of "marginal" books--good books that cannot find a sufficient market to be profitable. ______ Use 'Control F' to search this page. * NOTE: OUR content description is GUARANTEED accurate for THIS magazine.
