Identification Guide for Lionel Electric Trains covers the "Post-war Era" only from 1945 until 1969. The Sunoco 2-Dome Tank Car No. 6465 was produced from 1948 to 1956. Early versions from 1948 and 1949 had steps at the four corners of the frame and were equipped with staple end trucks that have electronic coil couplers. Production during 1950-52 have staple end trucks with magnetic couplers, and after 1952, these cars came with bar-end trucks that have magnetic couplers. The body was painted SILVER with either DARK BLUE or BLACK rubber stamped lettering. Discounting the variations due to changes in trucks and types of couplers, there are five major variations: Variation A: Staple-end trucks with electronic coil couplers. The word "TANK" is included at the end of the car data. Rubber-stamped "6465" on the underside of the Type 1 frame that has four steps at the corners. 1948-49 production. Variation B: Equipped with staple-end or bar-end trucks with magnetic couplers. The word "TANK" in included in the car data. Type 2 frame without the four steps. 1950-1952 production. Variation C: Staple end trucks with magnetic couplers. The word "TANK" in included in the car data. Type 2 frame without the four steps. This variation has a distinctly different hi-gloss SILVER color. 1950 production. Variation D: The word "TANK" has been replaced with "6465" in the technical data. Used a Type 7 frame that has bar-end trucks with magnetic couplers. 1952-54 production. Variation E: Used a Type 8 frame that is rubber-stamped "6455" on the bottom. 1955-56 production. 21
