TOP OF THE WEEK:
GRAND TOUR: Gerald Ford set off last week to reassure an edgy Europe that America reiuain devoted to its defense.
There were signs his trip might accomplish far more: a Possible step forward in the long quest for peace in the Mideast.
Both Arabs and Israelis seemed to he showing fresh interest in step--by--step negotiations.
MALPRACTICE--DOCTORS IN REVOLT: U.S. doctors are in revolt against their skyrocketing malpractice-insurance premiums,
and in a number of states they are either out on strike or threatening to go out. The situation could reach crisis
proportions if the dilemma is not resolved. Already, some physicians have chosemi early retirement rather than pay the
new malpractice premiums. The huge increase in malpractice premiums stems from a complex welter of causes, and there
are bitter recriminations on all sides. Working with files from Newsweek bureaus across the nation, Medicine editor Matt
Clark examines the problem. (Newsweek coverphoto by Lawrence Fried--The Inlage Bank.).
MOVING ON: For the past three years, Contributing Editor Shana Alexander has graced the pages of Newsweek with her
keen-eyed musings on the American scene. But last week, with shared regrets, she and the magazine announced that she
is giving up her regular column to devote more of her time to her television commitments (on CBS-TV's '60 Minutes") and to
a book about tile kidnaping and conversion of Patricia Hearst.
