The Rev Raymond L. Whitehead in Hong Kong. TOP OF THE WEEK: CHRISTMAS '63. In a world shocked and saddened by John F. Kennedy's death, Christmas would be just a bit different. Time was healing the wound, the official mourning period was at an end. But despite a late rush of holiday shopping and gaiety, the mood of Christmas 1963, was one of sober thought and earnest prayer. The words, "Peace on Earth to Men of Goodwill," held fresh meaning. The White House, where a new First Family prepared for Christmas, was framed by that wish (photo above); and the new President, in the midst of a busy week, took time to go to the United Nations and pledge that there is only one war the U.S. wants to wage--a war on "hunger, poverty, and disease." Calling for an end to the cold var, President Johnson echoed the words of the fallen Chief Executive, saying: "Peace is a journey of a thousand miles, and it must be taken one step at a time. There was still division in the world, but the prayers of good men everywhere reflected the bright desire to make the journey. THE COVER. "We must first express a concern for people." Day by day, teaching the young, caring for the sick, succoring the troubled in a teeming fishing village near Hong Kong, young Protestant missionary Raymond L. Whitehead gives living testimony of his concern. Whitehead is one of the new breed of missionaries who knows that the saving of disused minds must come before the saving of souls, that practicing Christianity can be more important than preaching it. NEWSWEEK correspondents, in Africa (John P. Nugent), Asia (Robert K. McCabe), South America (Milan j. Kubic), and the Middle East (Joe Alex Morris Jr.), visited mission- aries of many faiths--who share a common mission. From their reports, Kevin P. Buckley wrote this year's Christmas cover story. Pages 36 to 39. (NEWSWEEK photo by Inger Abrahamsen from Rapho Guillumette.). NEWSWEEK LISTINGS: NEWS: The Presidential Succession; Time of Hope Christmas 1963; Aftermath of the John F.
