Item description

New! Joan of Arc Enters Orleans ? by Jean Jacques Scherrer? Beautiful Catholic Artwork ? Catholic Art Print ? Archival Quality Joan has the banner raised high as she triumphantly enters the French city of Orleans which she has liberated from English control. It is May 8, 1429. Joan is a 17-year-old peasant girl with no education, and she has just defeated one of the most powerful armies in the world. She said she had visions of St. Michael and others who prompted her on her mission. She had had to first convince the military leaders of the French that she was sent by God and these visions were real. Jean Jacques Scherrer (1855?1916) was a French painter famous in his day for historical paintings. He did this painting in 1887, at a time when there was, for whatever reason, 450 years after her death, a groundswell of interest in Joan. Mark Twain and George Bernard Shaw, hardly Catholics, wrote about her, as did many others, and many painters painted her image. St. Therese of Lisieux wrote a play about her, quietly in the convent. It all culminated in Joan?s canonization on May 16, 1920, five years and a day before Therese was canonized. L'Entree de Jeanne d'Arc a Orleans, victorieuse des Anglais. 16.4x12.2 feet.
