Triple-bill of female-friendly dramas. 'Mona Lisa Smile' (2003) is set in 1953 at Wellesley College, a prestigious women's college in New England with a student population of young women from respectable, privileged families. On the whole the girls, products of a time when women's roles were strictly defined, show more interest in marrying well than in achieving intellectual growth or artistic freedom. But when a new art history professor, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), begins teaching at the college, their repressed upbringings and narrow ideas are brought into question. A Berkeley graduate with progressive ideas, Watson sets out to stretch her students intellectually, and challenge their limited outlook on life. In 'A League of Their Own' (1992), with all the male professional baseball players away during World War Two, drunken ex-major league star Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is employed to coach the Rockford Peaches, a team made up of women from all walks of life. Initially reluctant, he rediscovers his enthusiasm when he realizes how much the game means to his all-girl team as they embark on the World Series. Finally, in 'Maid in Manhattan' (2002), Jennifer Lopez stars as Marisa Ventura, a single mother who works as a maid in one of New York's top hotels, but has aspirations to do better. Holding her back is her mother (Priscilla Lopez), who thinks she should accept who and what she is and leave it at that. However, after a case of mistaken identity Marisa finds herself being pursued by Chris Matthew (Ralph Fiennes) who is staying at the hotel and is running for the Senate, as a Republican. Egged on by her friends at the hotel (Bob Hoskins amongst them) and her son, Marisa decides to accept a date with the dashing bachelor but finds their paths are definitely not the same and she returns to her New York suburb, having lost her man and job. Will love conquer the social divide? Please note this DVD is region 2 and will only work in the following regions Japan, Europe, South Africa, the Middle East (including Egypt) and Greenland, Unless you have a multi-regional DVD Player.
