I came across this hand fired Chinese Mud Man or Mudman at a recent Estate Sale. I purchased several of these and will be adding more to my booth as I can. Most of these were purchased during the 1970s according to the person at the sale. These figurines are commonly known as mud figures, mud people, mud men, or mudmen. They are from China. This one is quite unique with the added color and the exquisite features. The Chinese have long created the miniature trees called Bonsai and these were created to add to the forests to create living images among the trees. This man has amazing detail in his face with unique facial expression. I can't imagine being able to create something so small, yet so realistic. He is in excellent condition. The piece is just over 2 1/2” inches tall and 2 1/2”inches wide. The entire piece is tan with white hair and brown, other than the items in his cart. He is holding a pipe in his hand and resting his other hand on a cart filled with fruits and bread. They are painted in pink, green and cream. There is a flower on the side of the cart. The painstaking detail in this figure is wonderful down to the textured clothing and the realistic face. This would be a perfect addition to your collection or the start of a new one.
