Item description
6" x 8.5", 272 page hardcover with dustjacket titled MEN WITHOUT COUNTRIES: THREE ADVENTURERS OF THE EARLY SOUTHWEST by John Edward Weems/ Houghton Mifflin Company, First Printing , Copyright 1969 / A fascinating historical account of three adventurous men of the early Southwest - James Wilkinson, Philip Nolan, and Peter Ellis Bean. John Edward Weems takes the reader on a trip to the Spanish occupied lands west of the Mississippi through the fascinating lives of three men, two of whom (Philip Nolan and Peter Ellis Bean) are not well known in the history of our country and deservedly so. The other, Gen James Wilkinson, is famous for his role in the Revolutionary War and the later revelation of his role as an agent of Spanish government. In the early 19th century, the American west was a great lure to the imaginations of all the many men whose lives were stifled by the established east and without them, this country may still be a minor power. Although these three did not change our history, their stories bring us back to a time when men by their actions were able to forge their own destiny.
The book is complete and in GOOD - VERY GOOD condition with some overall wear mainly to the dustjacket. The spine of the dustjacket is sunfaded and there is an old sticker stain, some scuffing, and an edge tear on the front cover. On the half-title page is inscribed, "Regards, to Vernon Duty, John Edward Weems."
