-Description-
Title Lucie Rie A Retrospective
Publication year 2010
This is a rare exhibition catalogue of Lucie Rie,one of Britain's greatest 20th century potters.
It is the first full-scale retrospective since Lucie Rie's death.
More than half of the 250 works shown in this exhibition are from outstanding private and public collections found overseas,
including those of British and German museums.
More than 10 pages are written in English.
The English forword to this book says,"
We are pleased to bring you this retrospective of the work of Lucie Rie (1902-1995), one of Britain's greatest 20th century potters.
Lucie Rie was born in Vienna, a city renowned for the richness and variety of its art. She studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule, the art school, where the faculty included the architect Josef Hoffmann and the painter Koloman Moser. She became fascinated by ceramics and went on to win prizes at many international exhibitions, establishing her reputation as a potter. Then, with the drums of war beating ever louder, in 1938 she moved to London, where she worked for the next half century.
There, in the work of the first generation British studio potters, Bernard Leach and William Staite Murray, Lucie Rie discovered a world of ceramics different from that on the Continent She established her own style, informed by engagement with trends at the leading edge of architecture and design, a style in which the form created on the potter's wheel, color, and decoration are one. Her work has a quiet yet powerful presence that vividly expresses the insight and joy discovered through its creation. Rie moved from Vienna to Britain in the period in which modern ceramics were flourishing. Her passion for authenticity in design transcended time and space, and continues to attract admirers.
More than half of the 250 works shown in this exhibition are from outstanding private and public collections found overseas, including those of British and German museums. The cooperation of British research institutions, in particular, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and the Crafts Study Centre, has made it possible to show, for the first time in Japan, precious examples of the artist's notes on glaze recipes, letters, and photographs. Through the wealth of materials on display at this exhibition, the first full-scale retrospective since Lucie Rie's death, we are able to trace Lucie Rie's career from its start in Vienna to its full blossoming in Britain, and to savor to the full the extraordinary fascination of her work.
Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of the museums, research institutions, and private collectors who have graciously lent rare works and other materials for this exhibition. We would also like to thank the many other individuals and institutions without whose assistance, support, and cooperation this exhibition would not have been possible."
