Item description

Antique Gelatin Silver Photograph in Folder. An imaginative pose featuring a little boy gripping a goldfish bowl. Photo by J.E. Purdy studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Measures approximately 6.25 x 9.25 including folder. Photo alone without the mount and white border measures 4 x 5.75. Condition: This is an original photograph, not a copy or reproduction. It is in excellent condition. Comments: James Edward Purdy opened his photography studio in 1899 at 146 Tremont Street across from the Boston Common with C. H. Howard and himself as photographers. In 1924 the address was 145 Tremont, possibly from expanding into the neighboring building. In 1920 he opened a second studio at 390 Tremont and four years later it was renamed Castle Photo Studio. In 1930 J. E. Purdy and Co. moved to 160 Tremont Street. James retained ownership until his death in 1933. His son Stanley Blanchard Purdy worked for him starting in 1903. In 1924 Stanley owned the Castle Photo Studio and in 1934 he was president and treasurer of J. E. Purdy and Co. Stanley died in 1966.
