KARL SCHMIDT (1890-1962) "Waterside" MODERN MID CENTURY Impressionist Surrealist Landscape Original 1940s Oil on Canvas Hand Signed Lower Right Excellent Condition Original Gold Gilt Hardwood Frame. Size: 29" x 25" The Artist: Karl Schmidt (1890-1962): Although of Austrian heritage, Karl Schmidt was an American artist born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1890. Developing an early artistic eye, Schmidt began drawing and painting while still quite young. He later graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a private research university, focusing on the instruction and research of technical arts and applied sciences. Founded in 1865 in Worcester, the school was one of the United States' first engineering and technology universities. Schmidt developed two great talents. in aeronautics and painting. He drew on his knowledge of air flow in his paintings, with his atmospheric depictions of clouds. Following his work at WPI, Schmidt traveled to England where he studied art and painted seascapes of Cornwall and coast of Brittany. Later he traveled back to the US and was a resident of Boston and Worcester until 1915 when he moved to Santa Barbara, CA. There he was associated with the Harmer Studio where he worked with the legendary California oil painter, Alexander Harmer. In 1918 he joined the US Navy and served in the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics. He later pioneered construction of "lighter-than-air" aircraft such as balloons and dirigibles, and rose to the rank of Navy Commander. While in the Navy he exhibited in several cities throughout the U.S., extensively in California, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Schmidt later moved north and retired in Los Gatos, California, north of Monterey.
