Item description
THE PHILOSOPHY OF MARTIN HEIDEGGER
by J. L. Mehta
Banaras Hindu University Press, First Edition, 1967
Condition: Very Good+ to Near Fine in Near VG dust jacket
Martin Heidegger (born in 1889) was a German existentialist philosopher. "The main themes of [his] thinking are...Man, World, Being and Truth, and Language which encompasses them in the medium of thought." He was especially concerned with learning the secret of Being.
This book was the first publication of philosopher/author Mehta's thesis submitted for his Ph.D. degree from the Banaras Hindu University. Mehta became recognized as one of the world's most knowledgeable experts on Heidegger. The book is in English; its first U.S. publication (by Harper Row) was in 1971. It has now been out of print in the U.S. for more than 40 years.
This copy is signed and inscribed to Glenn Gray (dated Dec. 23, 1976, less than a year before Gray died). J. Glenn Gray was an American philosopher, writer and professor of philosophy at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Quoting Wikipedia: "As a general editor for Harper Row, Gray supervised work for the publisher on translations of the German philosopher Martin Heidegger, with whom he formed a personal association, and was among his earliest champions in the United States." (I acquired the book at an estate sale of Gray's personal library.)
Also, Mehta laid into the book a copy of the 16-page Examiner's Report (in both German and English) on his thesis. In their conclusion, the three examiners state, "We are deeply impressed by his wide scholarship and acute understanding of philosophical issues."
The book has moderately bumped cover corners, some wrinkling at the spine ends and three modest edge bumps; o/w it is generally in excellent shape -- tight binding and no marks or writing except for the inscription on the ffep. The jacket has general edge and fold corner wear, plus a sunned spine.
This item from a small university press in India is a rare find for collectors of philosophical literature, especially with the associational significance of the inscription and the Thesis Examiners' Report.
