The book is written as a historical document, detailing how the Confederate armies had prevailed at Gettysburg in 1863, and referencing the accidental death of General Ulysses S. Grant in Mississippi , as well. In addition, the book includes the (alternate) history of the Confederate States of America (CSA) for the balance of the 19th Century, and its relationship with the United States government to the north, as well as the problems that the CSA faced with other nations. Overall, a very well-written "alternate history," without all the "sturm und drang" which HARRY TURTLEDOVE finds necessary in his similarly-themed novels.
