A noise gate is works as a noise eliminator that prevents unwanted buzzes and feedback from being amplified when you are not playing guitar. Setting a threshold, or volume level limit on the pedal determines when the noise gate is "opened" to let signal pass, and when it "shuts" to prevent signal from passing through to the amp.
