Item description

Chinese Intellectuals in Crisis Search for Order and Meaning, 1890-1911 by Hao Chang Berkeley, Los Angeles London: University of California Press, (1987). First edition. An examination of the moral-spiritual thought of some major figures of the Chinese transitional era of 1895 to 1911 by Professor Hao Chang of Ohio State University. Dr. Chang puts forth the idea that a primary aspect of that crisis was the breakdown of the ideological foundation of the traditional Chinese order and the intellectuals' struggles to recreate the illusion of order to fill the vacuum. Because the ideas and values inherent in the Chinese concepts of political order and social order have traditionally been fused, the disruption of one always greatly affects the other. And he suggests that the present intellectual crisis (in the mid-1980's) should be considered from that perspective. A deep and thought-provoking philosophical book about an important movement in China over a century ago. Fire-engine red cloth covers with shallow gilt-stamped titles to spine; red and black titles on dust jacket. Octavo; (6-1/4" by 9-3/8"). 223 pages, including index.
