Ships same or next day (weekdays and Saturdays)! ABOUT THIS: FOREWORD "I could write a book about this place." I must have said it once too often, because the challenge finally came: "Why don't you?" The main reason was the apparent impossibility of finding the right tone. There seemed to be two equally unacceptable alternatives: the Scylla of verbal bouquets and flagwaving puffery; and the Charybdis of muckraking, whistle-blowing tell-it-like-it-is. The one would be insipid and, with all due respect, boring. And the other would never be printed. What course could one possibly steer between these two? In School Days in California, Mr. Cate had already told the story of his school from 1910, the first year in Mission Canyon, to 1950, the year he retired. Curtis Crawford added a chapter, aThe Fifth Decade," to round out the first half-century, and the book appeared in conjunction with the School's Fiftieth Anniversary celebration in 1960. Mr. Cate subsequently wrote Lighter and Sadder Sides of School Life.) I finally decided that with a little doing I could perhaps manage an acceptable compromise, something nearer Charybdis than Scylla, something that could be described as telling it is-sort-of-like-it-is": full disclosure up to but not including the point where someone gets hurt. Caveat lector: what follows is not to be taken as some official, complete, or definitive chronicle of what happened on the Mesa between 1960 and 1985. It does not necessarily or even probably represent the School's official position, nor does it compete with the bulletins, newsletters, view books and brochures through which the School tells its own story. It is rather a personal perspective on those years. Stanley Woodworth is Senior Master and 0. Curtis Crawford Schoolmaster at Cate School, Carpinteria, California, where since 1948 he has taught under all five of the School's Head-masters. During his time on the Mesa he has variously served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department (36 years), coach of varsity squash and baseball (30 years), Dean of Stu-dents (15 years), Dean of Faculty (10 years), Assistant Head-master (21 years), and on three occasions Acting Headmaster. Since 1969 he has been the School's Director of Studies. Cate School is a highly selective, coeducational university-preparatory school for boarding and day students in grades 9-12 located in Carpinteria, California, eleven miles from Santa Barbara. In 2012, the school had 270 students, who came from 31 states and 18 foreign countries. Wikipedia Cate Mesa Rd, Carpinteria, CA 93013
