Item description
Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1920's silent film war drama/romance, THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, released in 1921 by Metro Pictures Corporation and directed by Rex Ingram. Based upon the famous novel by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, an extended family split up in France and Germany find themselves on opposing sides of the battlefield during World War I. The cast includes Rudolph Valentino, Alice Terry, Pomery Cannon, Josef Swickard, Bridgetta Clark, Viiginia Warwick, Alan Hale, Mabel Van Buren, Stuart Holmes, and John St. Polis.
The image is from one of the film's key scenes when Etienne Laurier (John St. Polis), having caught his wife, Marguerite (Alice Terry), having a secret rendezvous with the much younger Julio Desnoyers (Rudolph Valentino), just as he is about to slap the younger man with his glove as Julio's father, Marcelo (Josef Swickard), watches with alarm. It is in near-fine condition with one pinholes in each corner; random signs of wear in the borders; corner creases; and a very small creases in the image area, simply from handling over time.
Valentino's performance, and his mastery of the infamous "Tango" dance, in this film catapulted him to silent film stardom.
