Antique Photograph. Depicting Elizabeth "Betty" Susan Gammon Tebbetts. Photo by a studio in Carthage, Missouri. Measures approximately 3.5 x 5.75. Condition: This is an original photograph, not a copy or reproduction. It is in very good condition. Comments: Known as Betty, she was the second of two daughters born to Charles Breckenridge Gammon Alvina Postel. She was born November 7, 1896 in Mascoutah, Illinois and raised in Carthage, Missouri, where her father owned a music store in the town square and was a one time mayor. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1915, was senior class vice president and orator. She graduated from Ward Bellmont College in Nashville, Tennessee and upon her return to Carthage, she married William Brinkerhoff Tebbetts in a formal ceremony at the home of her parents on Main Street. They moved to California in 1919, first to Long Beach, and then to Ontario in 1924. Both sets of parents soon followed them to California. They they opened Tebbetts Market in June 1928, at the corner of Sultana and Fourth. She was active and school and church work, and after the untimely death of her husband was the secretary of the First Baptist Church in Pomona.She was the mother of: Betty Susan Tebbetts Bull; Mary Jane Tebbetts Ternuise; Dorothy Ann Tebbetts King. She died July 13, 1950 in Verdugo City, California and is buried in Pomona Cemetery in Pomona, California. A photocopy of this on-line information will be included with the purchase of this photo.
