Item description
On DVD or VHS: Picture above is of dual King George VI winner (1973 1974) - the great filly DAHLIA
Since 1951 's all-age championship race has been the King George VI and Queen Diamond Stakes at Royal Ascot. Every year tells a story: see RIBOT the unbeaten Italian champion winning his fourteenth straight victory in 1956; BALLYMOSS, the first Irish-bred to win this race in 1958; NIJINSKY II, the first Triple Crown winner in 35 years in 1970; MILL REEF who wins by the largest margin as yet - six lengths in 1971; BRIGADIER GERARD's perfect season of 15-for-15 in 1972; DAHLIA storming down the stretch beating ROBERTO and RHEINGOLD in 1973 - the race's only dual winner; the magnificent horse, THE MINSTREL, in 1977 featuring EXCELLER; TROY in 1979; ELA MANA MOU in 1980; the ill-fated SHERGAR of 1981; PETOSKY in 1985 featuring RAINBOW QUEST, 1986 the great DANCING BRAVE, 1987 REFERENCE POINT; 1989 with NASHWAN; and many other horses are shown who competed but didn't win such as CAERLEON in 1983 and SADLER'S WELLS in 1984.
Plus news making events such as LESTER PIGGOT's seven King George wins and most famous of all - what became known as, "The Race of the Century" - the legendary contest between BUSTINO and GRUNDY in 1975; hear the roar of the crowd as they become locked in a dual that finished both their careers. Amongst other highlights are the wonderful gray race mare owned by Prince Ali Khan, PETITE ETOILE (who was actually runner-up to AGGRESSOR under a poorly-judged ride from Lester Piggott).
As a supreme test of the finest horses, Ascot's Diamond Stakes is the truest in Europe. Since its first running in 1951, it has overwhelmingly succeeded in its purpose - to bring together in competition top class horses from different generations and different countries over a distance requiring both speed and stamina - only in this way can a true champion be crowned. With film of the first race all the way through 1989 - this is a unique and fascinating insight into the history of the Diamond Stakes - one of the most popular and celebrated events in Europe's racing calendar.
65 Minutes.
