Alexandrian senna, belonging to the Senna genus, is an ornamental plant utilized in herbalism. Indigenous to upper Egypt, particularly in the Nubian region and around Khartoum (Sudan), it is also commercially cultivated in these areas. Additionally, it is grown in other regions such as India and Somalia. This shrubby plant typically grows to heights of 0.5-1 meter, occasionally reaching two meters. Its erect stem is pale-green and branched, with long spreading branches that bear four or five pairs of leaves. These leaves are arranged in complex, feathery pairs. The pods and leaves of Alexandrian senna are employed as a potent laxative, stimulating peristaltic bowel movements and providing relief from constipation. However, it is not recommended for chronic constipation. When used short-term, side effects of senna tea are generally mild and limited. The leaves and pods have been used since ancient times and remains an important treatment in both traditional and conventional medicine. Senna tea is also used for weight loss. For making tea: The daily recommended dosage is 15-30 mg. Avoid consuming the tea for prolonged periods. To prepare, steep 1-2 grams of dried senna leaves in hot water for a maximum of 10 minutes. Strain the mixture into a cup and sweeten to taste. Limit consumption to no more than twice a day.
