Item description

THE SLEEPING AND THE DEAD Edited by August Derleth Pellegrini Cudahy, First Edition, 1947 Condition: Very Good  In his day a leading author of regional fiction (far removed from the horror genre), August Derleth is now best remembered as a co-founder of the publisher Arkham House and the man who saved H.P. Lovecraft from obscurity. He is also remembered as himself a writer and editor of supernatural stories. THE SLEEPING AND THE DEAD is one of the biggest (518 pages) and most scarce of his horror anthologies. It was also chosen in a poll as one of the 100 best horror books. There are thirty vintage stories (the majority from Weird Tales, many of them little-known) in this out-of-print book; authors include Lovecraft, Bradbury, LeFanu, Bloch, Blackwood, Kuttner, Clark Ashton Smith and Edith Wharton. Upper cover corners somewhat bumped, modest fraying on lower corners, slight scratching on front cover, small white stain on spine, erasure and small penciled date ("6/11/49") on ffep, moderate age toning on pages. There's a small book dealer stamp on the front paste-down. No dust jacket. Overall, the book is quite nice, firmly bound, with no other internal marks or creasing. An elusive, in-demand title. This is the best price found on the Internet at time of posting (shipping is included).
