Item description

Vintage original 7.5 x 10 in. US glossy keybook photograph from the classic 1930's theatrical-themed drama/romance, DANGEROUS, released in 1935 by Warner Bros. and directed by Alfred E. Green. Don Bellows (Franchot Tone) finds former stage star Joyce Heath (Bette Davis) a penniless drunk and takes her to his Connecticut home for rehabilitation. Unaware that she is married to Gordon Heath (John Eldredge), he asks his fiancée, Gail (Margaret Lindsay), to free him and offers to sponsor Joyce in a play. When Gordon refuses to give Joyce a divorce, she runs the car into a tree, crippling him for life. Joyce urges Dan return to Gail, opens her play, and begs Gordon for forgiveness. The cast includes Alison Skipworth, Dick Foran, Walter Walker, Richard Carle, and George Irving. The image features a close interior shot of actress Joyce Heath (Bette Davis) having an important conversation with Mrs. Williams (Alison Skipworth). This keybook photograph, which is untrimmed, was professionally linen-backed in very fine condition. Bette Davis ' character was inspired by the tragic story of one of her screen idols, Jeanne Eagels. Though Davis was very proud of the Academy Award she won for this film, she didn't think she deserved it that year--in her opinion, Katharine Hepburn should have won for Alice Adams (1935). Davis always thought she won as compensation for not even being nominated for her star-making performance in Of Human Bondage (1934) the previous year. Davis initially turned-down this part that would win her the Oscar, but Warner's production chief, Hal B. Wallis, convinced her the role could be made into something special. Dangerous was the first film in which Davis wore her hair in the short "bob" cut that was styled by Perc Westmore and she would favor this look the rest of her life. According to notes on the film at TCM, producer Harry Joe Brown walked in on an intimate moment between Franchot Tone and Bette Davis. As Tone was engaged to Joan Crawford at the time, this supposedly was the beginning of the famous Crawford-Davis feud.
