Item description
Vintage original 11x14 in. U.S. lobby card, very good+ condition.
DRUMS OF LOVE is a historical fiction drama/romance directed by D.W. Griffith about an arranged marriage between royals in two countries. The beautiful color-tinted image depicts a long shot of the Duke Cathos de Avlia (Lionel Barrymore) admiring the beautiful Princess Emanuella (Mary Philbin) as the Duke's handsome younger brother, Count Leonardo de Alvia (Don Alvarado), watches nearby. The hue of the color-tinting is quite unusual and very attractive, which adds to the appeal of the lobby cards from this film. The design is complimented by a dark blue and orange crest or shield bearing the images of an eagle. The film's tagline states that DRUMS OF LOVE is "D.W. Griffith's greatest picture since 'The Birth of a Nation,'" which was certainly an exaggeration and attempt by United Artist's publicity department to capitalize on Griffith's most famous success. This lobby card is in very good+ condition only, as it has one vertical fold down the center of the card which ends in a 0.75 in. vertical tear, otherwise is would grade much higher. There is one pinhole in or near each corner; two 0.25 in. diagonal creases on the top right corner; and random tiny areas of surface soiling/spotting. Interestingly, this lobby card was folded by an orchestra member in order to store a piece of sheet music in it, as written in pencil in the top right portion of the verso is "School Day Memories in 3/4" and the number "2170" circled in pencil. The colors are very fresh and vibrant and this lobby card looks even more beautiful in person.
D.W. Griffith is considered the most important figure in the development and history of the American cinema and DRUMS OF LOVE was made near the end of the great director's career.
