Item description

TRADITION AND POETIC STRUCTURE by J.V. Cunningham Alan Swallow, 1960 First Edition Condition: VG+ to NF in VG dj "The criticism of J.V. Cunningham is unique in the modern 'age of criticism'....(from the preface to this collection of essays). "I have attempted to be brief, clear, and cold-blooded, to make a number of positive contributions to the field of literary scholarship, and to present a consistent and no doubt unpoetical attitude toward poetry.'" In addition to a group of essays appearing for the first time in book form, the volume also reprints, entire, the author's WOE OR WONDER: THE EMOTIONAL EFFECT OF SHAKESPEAREAN TRAGEDY. This copy is somewhat color-faded at the top of the covers/spine and, except for one underlining in the Preface, appears to be unmarked and with mostly white pages. The jacket has short edge/upper corner tears.
