Brand new factory sealed dvd of a rare Out Of Print (OOP) horror film with an interesting legacy. A 1928 American film, the 'Terror' (from a novel by Edgar Wallace) was the first sound horror film. It was remade in the US as 'Return of the Terror' in 1934. The novel was also the basis for a British film, the 'Terror', made in 1938. A West German version, the 'Sinister Monk', was filmed in 1965. This version is the only one in color and the German title actually means "the monk with the whip". A diabolical scientist cooks up a deadly nerve gas and schemes to make millions. But, a midnight rendezvous with a shadowy benefactor gets him garrotted for his trouble and the gas disappears. Soon, a nearby school is plagued by shocking murders, with poisonous gas (shot from unlikely places including a Bible!). The killer wears a red robe with a pointed hood and emerges from a blue fog with a white whip whenever a young girl goes wandering off by herself. Only intrepid inspector Higgins (a literal gumshoe) stands a chance of stopping this evildoer, whose deeds are dictated by an unseen arch-villain lurking nearby in a room filled with aquariums. The suspects include a large roster of older men who seem to have a habit of dipping into the student body for some after-hours enjoyment, but in the end the culprit is unmasked after a torturous explanation. Ah, and a superhero-style gun that shoots cobwebs figures into the plot. The music is a wacko, psychedelic melange of funky arrangements and whopping vocals.
