Offered here is a superb Gorham sterling and mixed metal trophy in the pattern "Cairo" with aesthetic applied elements. It is adorned with a large finely detailed applied Japanesque fish and applied seashell. It is made of sterling with inlaid gold, copper, and other metals with applied copper handles. Cairo displays a rare technique of mixed metals on silver, a centuries old technique employed by Japanese sword makers. Because mixed-metal applications were prohibited by European assay laws, Gorham gained an edge over the French and English silversmiths at that time. Some of the engraving reads "Members Challenge Cup, Class B Sailing, To Be Won Three Times" and is dated 1889. It is stamped with Gorham's hallmark, "Sterling Other Metals Y55", and date letter "P" for 1883. The piece measures 5 1/4" tall, 5 1/2" wide, and it weighs 10.9 ozt. It is in very fine condition.
