Item description

Measures 8-13/32" X 11-1/32", 128 pp plus covers, b w two-toned photos illustrations, Volume 99, Number 4 (August 1954), published by McCall Corp. (NY). Group 9-1933 BLUEBOOK had been amongst the first of the "pulp" magazines to have been published (starting in 1905), and over the years has attracted the talents of such well-known authors as EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS; ZANE GREY; H. RIDER HAGGARD; CLARENCE E. MULFORD; SAX ROHMER; ROBERT HEINLEIN ; MacKINLAY KANTOR; THEODORE PRATT; LUKE SHORT; GEORGE SIMENON -- and the list just goes on. By 1952, however, the writing was on the wall for the "pulps"; and BLUEBOOK began expanding beyond their "pulp" base, attempting to attract audiences that gravitated more towards the "slicks," such as THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, COLLIERS, THE AMERICAN MERCURY and so on; but this lasted only until 1956. By 1960, BLUEBOOK had become exclusively another of the "men's adventure magazines," until its demise in 1975. But here's a great example of BLUEBOOK's experimentation as a 1950's "slick" magazine: Contents: Front Cover -- illustrated by ISA BARNETT Politics Is People -- written by ROBERT BENDINER Wind Over Washington (from the Congressional Record) Pro And Con (Letters from readers) Editor's Note -- written by ANDRE FONTAINE Is Your House Wired For Trouble? -- written by GEORGE SCULLIN, illustrator unattributed Medical Report -- written by LARENCE GALTON The Hustlers -- written by GLYNN HARVEY, illustrated by ROBERT SHORE Baseball's Better Than Ever -- written by GEORGE (SPECS) TOPORCER Kanaya's Zero -- written by EDWARDS PARK, illustrated by FRANK LACANO How To Turn Hot Ideas Into Cold Cash -- written by RAY JOSEPHS Wordly Wise: Monkey -- written by WEBB GARRISON, illustrator unattributed One For The Road -- written by BRUCE McKIE, illustrated by TRACY SUGARMAN Read All About It: Steel -- written by JOHN T. DUNLAVY, illustrator unattributed The Ravisher -- written by VICTOR H. JOHNSON, illustrated by STAN DRAKE Put The Baby In A Packsack -- written by SEYMOUR SHUBIN Storm -- written by NOEL CLAD, illustrated by DAVID STONE You Can Drive Fast And Live -- written by GEORGE GREER LOU GOVER Touch-Tag At 300 MPH -- by TOM DAVIS Man Around The House -- written by JOHN SHARNIK Angler's Almanac: Striped Bass -- written by ROBERT C. McCORMICK BUFFALO BILL's Decline And Fall -- written by BERTRAM ZACH, illustrator unattributed The Iron Skipper -- written by VERNE ATHANAS, illustrated by MILLER POPE What Would You Do? (Contest based on moral dilemma in the movie "ON THE WATERFRONT") -- written by PAUL FARON Shipping charges include postage (including USPS Tracking on domestic shipments), packaging materials, labor fuel (the nearest post office is 14 MILES away!); but I do combine shipping charges on multiple items -- so fill up that cart NOW an' save some $$$!
