Item description

Brand new factory sealed dvd is Out Of Print (OOP) and no longer being manufactered. Casa Negra, a division of Panik House became defunct shortly after its inception making this an instant collector's item. This long sought-after classic has been digitally remastered and is the uncut version for the first time on dvd. It is filmed in Black White and is full frame, which is perfect for those old school tube TVs as the image will fill your screen. For widescreen owners, the film appears to have been designed for a 1.85:1 matte to be applied but is presented completely open here. I say this because there is some dead space at the top and bottom allowing for a zoom mode to be used that won't cut off too much of the subtitles. This was shown on television in America in a dubbed and heavily butchered edition courtesy of K. Gordon Murray. That print has since become extinct, this is the intact Mexican original which stands proudly as one of the best of that country's ilk. At a remote and utterly creepy insane asylum, Doctors Mazali and Aldama agree to a wager that whoever dies first will come back from the afterlife to tell the other about what lies in store "on the other side". Dr. Aldama dies and his colleague, Dr. Mazali arranges a seance to force Aldama to stick to their bargain. The ominous message that comes back is that Mazali will learn everything about the hereafter within three months. Soon all hell breaks lose thanks to one particularly agitated female inmate, a handy vial of acid, plentiful murder accusations, and a series of supernatural shenanigans that leave the poor surviving doctor sorry he ever entered into the deal in the first place. Director Fernando Mendez keeps even the most static scenes alive by lighting the frame with constant sources of texture like flickering candles, fires, billowing mist, and moving shadows that create a visually beguiling work that explodes in a few jolting terror set pieces. And speaking of sets, they are a bit more ambitious than usual, with some wonderfully creepy exteriors that would be right at home in a Hammer horror film. The disc is loaded with special features: a photo essay, a rock video, biographies, audio commentary, English continuity script, an exclusive Loteria Game Card, trailer, posters and stills gallery.
