The power emanating from this compelling Shiva image truly characterises the beautiful Koh Ker style. As is typical with this style the Shiva has a soft face and is adorned with scalloped elongated earrings. This handsome head is identified by the third eye marking his forehead. The face has eyebrows described by a continuous ridged line, a moustache, a beard, rimmed lips and wide open eyes. The inner rims of the ears are scalloped, in classic Khmer style. His tiara or mukuta is also richly decorated. A tradition that continued to develop in Cambodia from the 9th century to the post-Angkor period. The forehead depicts the Unalome. Variously described as representing the 'third eye' and the path to nirvana. In short, the Unalome symbol represents the path to freedom, spiritual awakening, and contentment.
