Item description

Antique 19c Indian Banjara Phulkhari Geometric Tapestry Shisha Mirror wedding shawl rare find Condition is Used considerring the age its in good shape. Has some mending here and there. Found multiple cracked mirrors like 2-3. Some mirrors are missing. Estate fresh and not cleaned. Needs special cleaning. Has a musky smell. Been sitting for decades in the closet for decades. Colors are vivid. This is a traditional tapestry common to India and Pakistan regions we believe. Shisha or Abhla bharat, the name given to the mirrorwork embroidery from Gujarat, Pakistan and Afghanistan, today. It?s a style of indigenous embroidery which has been used for generations. Tiny pieces of abhla, or mirrored glass, are sewn into the overall embroidery design, using a sickle stitch, creating a sparkly, jewel-like effect. The use of these mirrors in traditional dress, wall hangings and coverlets isn?t purely a decorative device, it has a practical purpose too. Mirrors were used in Islamic architecture to reflect the light and in the same way mirrors on fabrics within the home are used to reflect sunlight and candlelight at night. Measures approximately 82" x 56" inches. Museum quality piece for study or display use! This particular piece is most likely been used as a wedding shawl or special occasion head cover piece. Its usually been passed down from one generation to another. This piece comes from estate sale of Steel family Of Atlantic city that traveled during 1910-1930s collecting so much art and antique from Japan, India, North Africa. This is one of the many treasures we've got. This item might be older then we have listed we are not experts in this field. Glass mirror is much more thicker then nowaday ones looks to be very very old. Shawl is constructed from 3 long separately made pieces then they connected them by hand. No machine embroidery all hand made stitching. Please zoom in for more details or ask questions we will try to answer in our best knowledge.
