Item description

Vintage original 8 x 10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the 1940's war thriller, SABOTEUR, released in 1942 by Universal Pictures and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, in which a young man accused of sabotage goes on the lam to prove his innocence. The image features an interior scene in which Patricia "Pat" Martin (Priscilla Lane) and Barry Kane (Robert Cummings) try to tell two of their fellow party guests that their wealthy hostess, Mrs. Sutton, is a member of the nationwide sabotage ring. Affixed to the verso is the original paper snipe that describes that image. It is in near-fine condition. Saboteur was the first movie in which Alfred Hitchcock's name was billed above the title. His original cameo was cut by order of the censors. He and his secretary played deaf pedestrians. When Hitchcock's character made an apparently indecent proposal to her in sign language, she slapped his face. A more conventional cameo in front of a drugstore was substituted. The special effects crew took stills of the Statue of Liberty's upraised hand, her torch, and the ledge beneath it, which they then re-created to scale on a Universal soundstage.
