by Gary Mortensen Photography.
FEATURES:
GEORGE WINGATE by M. Stephen Doherty. In small oil paintings on panels, this New York artist expresses his interest in
commonplace subjects and his enthusiasm about the act of painting.
THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: CAROLYN LORD. In this article, California artist Carolyn Lord discusses how she paints on location
the myriad color relationships of flower gardens.
STEPHEN GJERSON, by Annette LeSueur Hathaway. After dropping out of art school because he was not allowed to study from the
Old Masters, this Minnesota artist enrolled in Atelier Lack, a small studio-type school in St. Paul which emphasizes the
traditional teaching methods of earlier masters. Gjertson, who is now teaching at Atelier Lack, here describes his classic
approach to painting his expressive figure paintings and floral and fruit arrangements.
DOROTHY DEHNER AND HER LIFE ON THE FARM WITH DAVID SMITH by Judd Tully. This article is a vivid document of two
artists' lives. The artist Dorothy Dehner, now in her 81st year, candidly describes her life with her famous husband, the
sculptor David Smith. Some of her paintings from her "Life on the Farm" series are reproduced, along with rarely shown
photographs of the couple.
ROBERT SEYFFERT by Chris Lamb. The artist is the grandson of Leopold Seyffert and the nephew of Richard Seyffert, both
distinguished portrait and landscape painters. Here Robert Seyffert, who lives in Maryland, discusses his own career as a
painter and teacher and how he paints his active, gestural oil landscapes.
MARIANNE WIELAND: EMBOSSING THE FACE OF ALASKA by Nancy Cain Schmitt. This Alaskan artist creates embossed prints of
her state's myths, animals, and people by sculpting printing plates out of illustration board. Here she describes the entire
printmaking process in detail.
CONTEMPORARY ART CRITICISM by Marcia Corbino. What do art critics have to say about their role in the art community? What
defines a critic's stance? The author interviews many art critics from across the country and finds that their views are as
controversial as the field itself.
